It seems that HK Universities continue on their march to develop links outside of their borders and deepen global ties. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Education University of Hong Kong and Polytechnic University signed agreements with Nazarbayev University on research and other areas. Kazakhstan was the launchpad for the belt and road initiative of Xi Jinping and so these developments aren’t a surprise. For me, the surprising thing is that even 5 years ago a ‘smaller’, non-Ivy league University from HK would not have been looking to expand links in this region, it would have focussed energies and strategies on the UK, Australia or Canada. As the traditional power house destinations of University education continue to face funding and political challenges at home. Asia based Universities are stealing a march with clarity provided by forward thinking governments and associated policies.
